Introduction:
Seismograph The Directors and Management leadership of YGSMRB are keen to improve the facilities, equipment and data within the Geophysics Department; For example the Department it bought modern geophysical equipment devices from 2000-2010 in addition to maintenance of the enormous information on Aerial Magnetic Survey of the Joint Natural Resources Project as they also copied data from ageing magnetic tapes to CD were copied from the magnetic tapes that were about to ruin into CDs in cooperation with friends in the Geosciences Council in South Africa as a free technical grant since the copying itself requires significant funding. lot of funds in addition to preserving the data collected through the works implemented using the loan of the Arab Social and Economic Development Fund. Such setup allows the Geophysics Department to provide geophysical services to the mineral exploration projects in the public or the private sectors. The most important services available in the Board are:
• Exploration of mineral resources, water and archeological items.
• Conducting studies related to the water basins.
• Applying the geophysical methods to study the geo-technical characteristics of the different projects such as dams, water barriers, sites of facilities and infrastructure.
• Analyzing and interpreting the data and the Aerial Magnetic Survey's maps.
• Picturing the water wells to define the physical characteristics of water tanks.

Geophysics department Accomplishments:

Analyzing and interpreting geophysical information:

The project of analyzing and interpreting the geophysical information is one of the most significant infrastructure projects in YGSMRB as it's the unified base of various methods on which the scientific knowledge of the sub surface invisible part of the crust is based through physical measurements usually on the ground.

The project processes and interprets the geophysical information as a service to the mineral exploration section in service of the mineral exploration works and in order to verify the irregularities in addition to implementing field geophysical surveys, training staff in qualifying the project's staff through training on the use of all geophysical equipment devices and how to take measurements and accurately record the data. The most important accomplishments of the Project from 2001-2010 can be listed as follows:
• Ground geophysical studies using magnetic, electromagnetic and radioactive methods and Induced Polarization (IP) in Waziyia district in Taiz 2011.
• Analyzing and interpreting the airborne magnetic survey information of Malhan mass in Al-Mahweet and implementing a  ground  magnetic survey in Khamis Bani Saad- Al-Mahweet 2002.
• Ground magnetic survey at Geophysical field survey using magnetism of Al-Masboub area, Al-Turbah district in Taiz 2003.
• Analyzing and interpreting the magnetic and radioactive aerial survey of Tawilah mass- Al-Mahweet and implementing  a follow up ground magnetic survey the magnetic field survey in Al-haimah Al-Dakhilyah in Sana'a 2004.
• Ground magnetic surveys at Geophysical field survey using magnetism of Humaidh area in Qubaiyta Lahj in 2004.
• Ground magnetic surveys at Geophysical field survey using magnetism of Thaniya area in Mareb.
• Ground magnetic surveys at Geophysical field survey using magnetism of Al-Qasheeb area in Al-Beidha and preparing the final report on the geophysical studies of Mawiya mass, eastern Nokoub 2005.
• Ground magnetic, electromagnetic  surveys at Geophysical and geological surveys using magnetism and electromagnetism in lower Markha, Shabwah 2006.
• Ground magnetic, electromagnetic  surveys at Geophysical and geological survey using magnetism, electromagnetism and electrical methods in upper Markha in Shabwah 2007.
• Ground magnetic, electromagnetic  surveys at Geophysical and geological survey using magnetism and electromagnetism in Wadi Naqas Maswara in Al-Beidha 2008.

In addition to the above, geophysical studies were implemented using the magnetic, electromagnetic and electrical methods for a number of mining companies such as the Canadian Odyssey Company in Waraqah, Dhamar, the British Abela Company in Tabaq Shabwah, the Canadian Flex Company in Al-Hamoura, Taiz,  the Canadian Cantex in Al-Hariqah in Hajja in addition to Yemen Iron Steel Ltd in Al-Thanyia in Mareb.

Geophysics and hydrology studies:
Hydrology studies constitute the base for defining the location places of underground water, well sites and their viability. Based on this, cooperation was initiated with the Dutch parties in early 1990s. Many geological and geophysical studies were carried out issued for the underground water basins in Sa'ada, Mareb, Abyan Delta and mouths of the valleys in Tihamah. This is added to the study of Wadi Al-Masilah in Hadramawt by the Canadian Comex Company through which a number of stations have been installed for water observation and wells have been drilled for geophysical studies. Cooperation with the Russian Government side has been finalized to prepare the hydro-geological maps on a scale of 1:500,000. The Board's activity in the field of hydro-geological studies has been limited to some joint studies such as the Project of Integral Management of Water Resources.

The Geophysics Department in YGSMRB has also contributed to the implementation of several hydrological studies aimed at locating spot the water locations for some important economic facilities in Yemen and for the private sector. The most important studies of which are:
• Studying and determining the water locations for Al-Barah and Amran cement factories.     
• Photographing a number of water wells in various places of the Republic to illustrate the water bearing stratigraphy define the  layers carrying water, the targeting areas, the tectonic zones cracked layers and faults. Several contracts have been signed over the past with foreign and local companies such as Comex in Hadramawt, Al-Kuhali, Al-Hanami, Al-Ghouli and Delta Al-Hansiyah companies.
• Conducting electric geophysical studies covering all the governorates in order to spot the positions of prospective water bores.wells drilling. Such studies have been executed for over 6,000 locations.
• Contributing to the hydrological studies of several basins such as Sardoud basin, Abyan delta, Mareb basin and Sa'ada basin.   
• Conducting geophysical studies to detect underground water  at Wadi Jardan for Al-Namir petroleum Company in 1993.
• Conducting geophysical studies to detect underground water in several cities; Dhamar, Al-Beidha, Ma'abar, Manajha, Hazm Al-Jawf, Mareb, Ataq and Al-Ghidha for the General Authority for Water and Sanitation 2003.
• Conducting geophysical studies to detect underground water in Socotra Island for the Arab Development Fund in 2006.
• Conducting geophysical studies to detect hot underground water in Al-Lessy Mount. In Dhamar for the German Project 2007.
• Carrying out geophysical studies in Amran basin for the German project in 2008.
• Conducting geophysical studies to assess water resources in Hawira valley in Mukalla, Hadramawt for the Chinese Company SINOMA in 2007.
• Conducting geophysical studies to detect underground water in Wadi Jardan in Shabwah for the French Emic Spie in 2007.
• Conducting geophysical studies to detect underground water in Safir area in Mareb for the French company Emic Spie in 2007.
• Conducting geophysics and tectonic studies for the electro-gas station in Jahran area in Dhamar for the Public Electricity Authority in 2008.
• Conducting geophysical and tectonic studies for the site of the new Sana'a airport for the Public Navigation Authority in 2008.
• Conducting geophysical studies to detect underground water in Wadi Abreen in Lahj for the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation in 2009.
• Conducting geophysical studies to detect underground water in Amad Sanhan and Radfan in Lahj for the Military Works Directorate in 2009.
Conducting geophysical studies to detect underground water in Ras Amran in Aden for Al-Firdous Company in 2009.

Participating in the Integral Water Resources Management Project (IWRMP):
The YGSMRB started to prepare the thematic maps of Sana'a basin in 2004. Such maps were well received by the relevant government bodies and external parties which agreed to provide the technical support for the project. This has led to expanding the project to become the Integral Water Resources Management Project in Yemen. The project was launched in October 23rd 2004 involving partners from YGSMRB and the Water Resources Authority with support from the friends in the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR).

The General Authority for Water Resources has been assigned to:

• Collect meteorology data.
• Study the movement of underground water, quantities and quality.
• Hydrological study of the water basins (characteristics and shape of the aquifers water tanks).
• Monitoring water levels in the water basins.

YGSNRB has been assigned to conduct the following:
• Geophysical survey of water basins.
• Geological and structural studies of water basins.
• Three dimensional modeling of water basins.

The following has been achieved by YGSMRB in this vital project:
• Phase one 2004-2007 (Sana'a basin, Amran basin)
- Preparation of the well distribution map by density and inventorying them.
- Preparation of the dams and barriers distribution map
- Preparation of the water quality/ quantity of soluble salts map.
- Preparation of the observatory well distribution map.
- Preparation of the land use map.
- Preparation of the wells distribution map by drilling year.
- Preparation of the wells distribution map by depth.
- Preparation of the pollution points map by source.

• Phase Two: 2008-2011 (Amran basin, Ibb basin, Abyan delta, Tuban delta)

- A field study and electric and electromagnetic sensors installation to recognize the geological formations (main and secondary faults and small intervals), and aquifers.
- Geophysical study of the structural characteristics of soil in the basins of Amran, Ibb, Abyan and Lahj.
- Studying the sewerage water leakage to the fresh waters.
- Implementing the structural studies of Amran and Ibb basins.
