The Mining Companies Operating in Yemen

As a result of promotional efforts the efforts exerted by YGSMRB at conferences and direct communication there are a number of  in the field of mining promotion in all modern ways and means, a number of local and foreign mining companies currently investing in Yemen. have been attracted. Currently, there are 13 operating companies including one company that was awarded a contract for zinc exploitation in Nahm area in Sana'a and this deposit it is under development, another company is developing a limestone quarry at works in the field of limestone mining in Hadramawt while the remaining 11 companies are at the exploration stage  and are prospective for  work in prospecting and metallic and non-metallic minerals s. explorations. A summary about the activities of these companies is presented hereunder.

1. Jabal Salab Company (Yemen) Ltd.

This is a British-Yemeni company headquartered in Sana'a. It has an exploitation contract for the zinc, lead and silver of Jabal Salab area in Sana'a which is secured with a 4 sq km mining lease issued under in a 4 square km land by virtue of the Republican decree No. 24 of 2007. The company is incorporated of the British Zincox which owns 52% of the project and the Yemeni Ansan Wikfs for Investments which owns 48%.
The Yemeni geographic historian Abi Al-Hassan Al-Hamadani in his book (the Two Ancient Jewels) indicated that the area Jabal Salab is a historical mining zone that used to be known as Al-Redhradh and was considered in the tenth century a major mine in the Islamic world for the extraction of silver. It is believed that the mining crafts in Jabal Salab  date back  2000 years ago as silver was mined by means of adits driven along through the horizontal corridors which are characterized by the occurrence of gaps full of the oxidized ore which contains rich deposits of is more flexible and rich with silver. It is also believed that the processing of the ores was done using the gravity techniques with over 400 furnaces built for extraction and refining. for refraction. The extracted quantity is estimated at about 400,000 tons. The ruins and traces of the ancient mines survived until the present time.
Zincox Company is one of the specialized companies in the field of oxidized zinc treatment and extraction of zinc oxide from oxidized zinc deposits.. It initiated its works in Yemen in 1998 as it reached an alliance partnership with both Minarco (an affiliate of Anglo-American) and the Yemeni Ansan Company to launch a joint project for exploration of zinc, lead and silver in Jabali area (Nahm, Sana'a).
The capital cost of development of the zinc, lead and silver mining project at Jabal Salab in Sana'a along with the creation of a facility lab for producing zinc metal  zince  condensation in Belgium is 244 million US$. The project currently needs funds of up to 115 million US$ to complete the construction of the treatment lab and the mining facilities within 19 months of receiving the funds (the Annual Report of Zincox).
The company is currently implementing  the first phase of the zinc exploitation project related to developing the mine and as it started to execute a number of construction works as summarized below: that could be summed up as follows:
- Paving the roads from the Completing the pavement of roads to the camp site in a length of 16 km from the main road Sana'a-Mareb to the camp site, a distance of 16 km..
- Completing site preparation for the  all the topographic flattening of the camp's site and building 30 units for accommodation and office facilities   is allocated for equipped and furnished with all the necessary furniture, electricity, water tanks and sanitation.
- Supplying the camp with a comprehensive healthcare unit with ambulances and a fire brigade.
- Completing all the construction works of the explosives magazine bombs stores and building to house the mine's equipment.
- Completing all the construction works of the accommodation of the Republican Guards squad responsible for the security of the company.
- Drilling two water wells and extending pipes of 9 km to the site to meet operational  the needs.
- Starting pre strip and stripping operations  the mine inception works (open hole) and removing the cover rocks (rock wastes) with almost 400 thousand tons of wastes have been removed. The zinc, lead and silver ores ready for treatment were extracted at a quantity of 100 thousand tons.
- Purchasing and procuring the mining machinery such as tractors, excavators Poclains, trucks and vehicles…etc.
- Completing site preparation the site flattening for the ore treatment facilities and initiating the concrete works.
- Starting the construction of the primary and secondary crushers' sites.
- Due to the constant improvement in the prices of silver, the company retested and reassessed the silver revenues based on the proposed prediction in the feasibility study. The Company plans to expand the project to involve silver treatment using the traditional treatment technology. One million ounces of silver is expected to be produced per year.

2. Cantex Mine Development Corp. (formerly Canadian Mountain)

This is a Canadian company headquartered in Kelowna, Canada and it has a branch in Yemen. It is licensed to explore for metallic minerals in the north eastern part of Yemen as follows:
- Gold in Hariqah, Hajja on an area of 71.1 km2
- Nickel and copper in Qutabah, Hajja on an area of 51.7 km2
- Nickel and copper in Suwar, Amran on an area of 110 km2
- Nickel, copper and gold in Masna, Faidh in Sa'ada on an area of 760 km2

The Company works in the field of gold, copper, nickel, cobalt,  platinum and diamond exploration in a number of countries; namely Canada, Greenland and Yemen. The Company is chaired by Dr. Charles Fipke who, along with BHP, discovered the first diamond mine   was the first to discover diamond in Canada. Cantex is one of the leading companies in the mining sector in Yemen due to the geological and exploration studies it has undertaken over the past fourteen years. This work that led to the discovery of over 1000 geo-chemical parameters of gold, nickel, copper and platinum in addition to the basic metals.  group. Through the first phase of its exploration works and through the continuation of the company's explorations (geological, geo-chemical, geo-physical and drillings…etc), five mineral projects with sediments of promising commercial potentials have been discovered and are currently being evaluated. determined and These are:
- Nickel and ferrite sediments in Suwar, Amran.
- Nickel and copper sediments in Qutabah, Hajja.
- Nickel, copper and gold sediments in Masna-Al-Faidh in Sa'ada.
- Gold sediment in Al-Hariqah, Hajja.

At present, Cantex has a joint venture with works with the Brazilian Vale company and is at the advanced stages of exploration, which if successful, may lead to in order to prepare a pre-feasibility study and then the feasibility study of nickel and copper projects in Suwar, Amran .  The Company is also carrying out a major drilling program on the Al Hariqah gold project near   in addition to Cantex works on the exploration of the gold project in Al-Hariqah in Hajja in order to prepare a pre-feasibility study and then the feasibility study. The exploration studies implemented by the Company in the concession sites are:

- Cantex carried out detailed geological surveys, semi-detailed geochemical surveys and semi-detailed geophysical along with a geo-chemical analysis of a large number of surface and sub-surface samples in addition to the drilling of 49 exploratory drill holes wells in a total depth of 6009 m.

- In 2009, Cantex and Vale Inco. Conducted a land geophysical survey that included gravity mapping of 15 km , magnetic of 32 km and a survey using the Induced Polarization Method (IP) covering an area of 2.5 km x 2.5 km. 1894 soil samples were collected in addition to the continuation of the geochemical mapping and the exploratory drilling. Lately, 7 exploratory drill holes wells have been drilled in a total depth of 2343 m in addition to the ones drilled over the past period. By the end of 2009, the total number of drill holes was for  wells reached 56 exploratory wells in a total depth of 8433 m.
- The present drilling program at Suwar has  works have been focused on the main part of the mineralization which is located within a 2.7 km long belt in order to determine the continuity and width of mineralization confirm the vertical thickness of the mineralization and complete the collection of the necessary data for the pre-feasibility study of Suwar mineralization should the results be sufficiently positive.
- In 2010, a 1,624 line kilometer helicopter-borne geophysical survey commenced over the Suwar project area by Vale company. The survey  was flown for which is to collect electromagnetics, magnetics and radiometrics and it purpose was to detect anomalies that might reflect data concealed is designed to test for nickel – copper – cobalt bearing massive sulphide mineralization similar to what has been previously discovered at Suwar Hill. A drilling program will be planned in 2011 to test anomalies produced by the survey.
- Nickel and Copper in Qutabah, Hajja:
- Qutabah mineralization was discovered by Cantex in 1997. The mineralization occurs within basic rocks intruded into a basement of interlocked with metamorphic volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Precambrian age. The exploration studies executed by the company showed that the mineralization occurs over an area of more than 23 km2. The scattered sulphide mineralization density is 1-20 m thick while the mass sulphide mineralization is 0.2-3 meters thick.
- Over the period 2007-2008, 14 exploratory drill holes, totaling 1670 metres, were drilled  wells were drilled totaling 1670 meters deep in the eastern and western parts of the to the east and west of wadi Qutabah intrusion in order to determine know the concentration of the platinum elements group and to gain information on the thickness of certain mineralized horizons. the extension of the ore horizon In addition to collecting Six surface samples collected from the mineralized horizons that gave encouraging assay results for copper 0.1-0.3%, nickel 0.3-0.8% and cobalt 0.1-0.2%. Studies have also shown that the third horizon was one of the best with the thickness of the mineralization intersected within the drilled holes with disseminated sulphides occurring over apparent widths of between 20 and 50 m and massive sulphides with apparent widths of up   and it is disseminated over an area of 340 meter with an average apparent thickness of 3 m.
- In 2010, a helicopter-borne geophysical survey was conducted by Vale over the Wadi Qutabah area. The survey was flown for , which is to collect electromagnetics, magnetics and radiometrics  and it purpose was to detect anomalies that might reflect concealed is designed to test for nickel – copper - cobalt bearing massive sulphide mineralization data, is designed to test for nickel – copper – cobalt bearing massive sulphide mineralization. The data of the survey are being processed currently to plan the drilling program in 2011.
- The aerial geophysical survey was commenced on  launched in 12th of June 2010 and concluded in November 10th 2010 in both Suwar (1200 km line) and Qutabah (475 km line) in order to test the electromagnetic, magnetic and radiometric data (Gamma Ray) The flight lines were flown E – W, with tie lines flown N-S, the line spacing was nominally 250 metres and the terrain clearance was nominally 60 metres but was higher than this in areas of power lines. in alignment with the flying lines east-west with 250 meter spacing between the lines.
- The survey was subcontracted to Aeroquest Ltd which has considerable a long experience in this field. The survey was conducted using a helicopter LAMA S A 315 B in an ideal altitude of 60 m above the ground.
- The electromagnetic survey has revealed several positive indicators that are currently being processed, traced and interpreted.
- Gold at  Al-Hariqah, Hajja

The company discovered the gold site in Al-Hariqah back in 1997. Over the period 1997-2008, the company undertook exploration studies covering an area of almost 25 km2 in Al-Hariqah and the adjacent areas. Focus was mainly directed towards the gold-rich mineralization area. The exploration studies of the mineralization ores included a detailed geological survey, a detailed geochemical survey and a detailed geophysical survey and drilling.

In 2009, the company pursued its explorations in Al-Hariqah and drilled 57 exploratory drill holes with a total depth of wells of 5233 meters deep in addition to 92 exploratory with a total depth of wells of 9415 meters deep that had been drilled prior to that time. The latest drilling works produced encouraging results with 39 meters of the gold mineralization intersected in a percentage of 3.01 gm of gold/ ton in one of the holes. In another hole, 73 meters of gold mineralization were intersected in 2.09 gm of gold/ ton. Based on drilling and surface mapping In light of the executed exploration studies, it can be concluded that the initial estimates of the inferred gold resource at gold reserves in Al-Hariqah is 20-60 million ton at a grade of in a content of 1-1.65 gm/ ton of gold.
