Geophysical Services

services-10_03 The Geophysics Department in YGSMRB provides the geophysical services to the mineral exploration projects in addition to the public and private sectors alike. The major available services can be summarized as follows:

• Exploration for mineral resources:
• Determining the sites and depths of underground water and conducting the studies related to water basins.
• Archeological works.
• Applying the geophysical methods to study the geotechnical aspects of the various geometric projects such as dams and water barriers along with the infrastructure.
• Analyzing and interpreting the aerial magnetic survey results.
• Taking photos of the water wells in order to define the physical characteristics of the aquifers water tanks.

Implementing the geophysical services using the following methods and devices:
The YGSMRB has a number of sophisticated geophysical survey devices which were supplied to the Board in 2005 and 2010. Such devices may be listed as follows:

- Electrical survey instruments (quantity: 3, model: Syscal R2).

services-10_06The electric scanning method is used to measure the electric characteristics of rocks and minerals through the ground conduction of electric current. This method is based on the resistivity variation (or conductivity) of rocks and minerals.

This type of scanning is basically used to detect groundwater, sedimentary structures, archeological exploration and engineering geology issues.

- Magnetic Surveying instruments (quantity: 2, model: MP-2 Scintrex)
The magnetic surveying method is applied to measure the magnetic properties of rocks and minerals as it measures the deviations or anomalies caused by the rocks and minerals to the magnetic field in their locations. Such scanning may take place on land or from air using planes or helicopters. This type of surveys is used basically to detect the deposits of iron metallic minerals, impulsive rock depositions*, study of the topography of the old basement rocks, oil and gas prospecting through the study of the sedimentary basins, identification of thickness and sedimentary formations in addition to archeological explorations.

- Electro-magnetic surveying instruments

• Temporal electromagnetic field survey (Terra TEM)
• Horizontal planar loop-frequency electromagnetic surveying (Apex MaxMin 1-9).

services-11_03The electromagnetic surveying method is used to test the electrical conductivity and resistivity electromagnetic properties of rocks and minerals through profiling the electromagnetic field generated as a result of electromagnetic induction of the electrical currents in the ionic geosphere. This type of surveying is basically used for exploration of mineral resources and groundwater, assessment of the water aquifers, prospecting the oil reservoirs in addition to other utilizations in terms of engineering geology applications, identification of underground pipelines and locating land mines demining.


- Seismic surveying instruments (quantity 2, model ABEM)

 

services-11_06The seismic surveying is used to measure the speed of sound through across the earth's layers as it profiles the time of the seismic sound wave travel from the transmitter to the receiver's location either directly or upon reflection or refraction while recording the variations in terms of capacity, frequency or band. The seismic surveying method is mainly used to prospect oil deposits and solve synthetic delicate issues in oil traps in addition to the study of old basement rocks topography, geological engineering issues of soil and foundations and categorization of rocks by structural competence hardness.



- Water wells imaging instruments (quantity: 2, model: RG Portlog):

 

Geophysical imaging of the drilled water wells is carried out done to identify the water bearing stratigraphy, water bearing tectonic zones layers carrying water, cracked or fractured layers and the faults as well as mapping along with the geological column at well sites with and determining rock and water temperature and the likely draw down capacity of the wells. the potential of determining the depth, measuring the subsurface layers temperature and the radius of wells.


- Analyzing and interpreting the data of the aerial magnetic survey:

The Geophysics Department in the Board executes the analysis and interpretation programs of the data and maps of aerial magnetic surveying in order to support the mineral resources' detection and prospecting programs, verify the magnetic anomalies on these maps and confirm them by conducting ground a land magnetic surveys.
